Red card bookings across teams, goals, and other moments defines 2026 World Cup opener.

2026 World Cup commences, with fiery encounter between Mexico and South Africa.
The FIFA 2026 World Cup, which is being hosted across 3 countries, namely Canada, America and Mexico, today commenced in one of the host nations, Mexico, at the Estadio Azteca, an 80,000 capacity stadium, packed with FIFA ranking officials, top government functionaries, dignitaries and football lovers across the globe.

During the first half, of the tournament's first encounter, between Mexico and South Africa, the host playing from left to right, secured an early lead in the 9th minute, where Julián Quiñones found the back of the South African net with an amazing strike.

In the 17th and 23rd minute of play, Teboho Mokoena of South Africa and Brian Gutirrez of Mexico were penalised by yellow cards respectively for infringements after which the match was put on a hold by the referee for the players to hydrate during a few minutes break. 

The game resumed and proceeded to the end of the first 45 minutes. In the 49th minute of the game, South Africa's Sphephelo Sithole suffered a red card, after a rough challenge against a Mexican.

In the 67th minute, following a well coordinated set up, Raúl Jiménez, secured the lead by scoring to make it 2 - nil, in favour of the Mexicans. This prompted more of physical contest from the South African players leading to a yellow card and a second red card in the game where Themba Zwane, was sent off the pitch. 

After 90 minutes of play, 7 minutes add on time was introduced to the game, where in the 90+2 minutes, César Montes of Mexico was sent off by a red card, following a rough tackle on a South African player who made attempt towards the goal area. 

The encounter ended in favour of the Selección Nacional de México, who triumphed in a firmly secured 2 - nil win over the Bafana Bafana of South Africa.
